Archives for December, 2008

Thirty-two vehicles and six companion models made it to the 2007 Consumers Digest’s best buys. Vehicles were grouped into 8 categories – Small Cars, Family Cars, Luxury Cars, Sporty Cars, Trucks, Vans, Compact/Midsize SUVs and Luxury/Full-Size SUVs. They were given ratings based on ergonomics, safety, behind-the-wheel testing, styling and amenities, warranty, ownership costs, and price. Further, performance is assessed according to starting and acceleration, shifting, steering, handling, ride quality, braking and fuel economy.

In the small category, best buy ratings go to Chevrolet HHR, Dodge Caliber, Honda Civic, Honda Fit, Jeep Compass and Nissan Versa. In the family car category, the auto best buys are Chevrolet Impala, Ford Fusion, Hyundai Azera, Hyundai Sonata, Mercury Milan and Toyota Camry/Solara. Luxury car best buys are Acura TL, Buick Lucerne, Infiniti M35/45 and Toyota Avalon.

Chevrolet Corvette, Ford Mustang, Mazda6, MINI Cooper, Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky are the best buys in the sporty car category. At the topmost list in the best van values are Chevrolet Avalanche, Ford F-150 and Honda Ridgeline are the top pickups, and the Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Caravan, Honda Odyssey, Hyundai Entourage and Kia Sedona.

For the compact/midsize SUVs, the best buys are Honda CR-V, Jeep Wrangler, Mazda CX-7 and Toyota RAV4. Honda CR-V is loosely derived from Civic. Wrangler is the successor of the famed World War II vehicle. CX-7, on one hand, is the slot between CX-5 and CX-9. It uses some Mazda Miata body parts to boost its overall appeal. Finally, RAV-4 is a crossover SUV, is a vehicle that had most of the benefits of an SUV.

For compact/midsize SUVs, 4 vehicles made it to the best buy standard. They are Acura RDX, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Mercedes-Benz’s GL-Class.

According to Randy Weber, Customer Digest’s publisher, “Value, as we see it, is based on purchase price and ownership costs relative to quality, performance and subjective factors like comfort and design.” Webber added, “Few purchases are more important, or require more research, than buying a new vehicle. Our analyses underscore our commitment to ensure that consumers are as satisfied with their auto purchase years after making it as they were on the day they drove off the lot.”

It was divulged by Rich Dzierwa, Consumers Digest editor that this is the first time the number of represented manufacturers reached 20. Also, for 5 years now, Chevrolet Tahoe, Dodge Caravan, GMC Yukon, Honda Civic, Honda Odyssey, MINI Cooper, Toyota Avalon and Toyota Camry retained the their best buy standing.

Consumers Digest, launched in 1959, is an American magazine publication that is intended to inform, evaluate and recommend products. It also tolerates other companies to use its reviews in their marketing strategies.

The styling is a gentle evolution of its ancestors but its front end is inspired by the new Volvo S80 sedan and the Volvo C30 hatch. But what is more interesting about the Volvo V70 is that it uses one engine which can run using five different fuels.

Some aficionados regard the wagon segment as dead. To circumvent this notion, Volvo put a lot of time and money to make the Volvo V70 wagon good looking and admirable in every respect. The all-new Volvo V70 belongs to the third generation of the car. However, the car is not treated as a direct replacement for the previous Volvo V70 but only as an estate version.

The Volvo V70 prototype is engineered to compete with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the BMW 5-Series. The wagon features a distinct grille and front bumper but the dashboard and majority of the interior are basically the same. Auto parts and accessories integrated to the car including Volvo brake caliper, rotors and suspension are upgraded to complement the functionality of the Volvo V70.

What is more interesting than minor modifications is the enhancement of the Volvo engine to entertain five fuels that include standard gasoline, E85 (bioethanol), natural gas, biomethane, and hythane. The most interesting fuel among the five is hythane. The latter is a mixture of hydrogen and methane. Hythane, the most recent type of alternative fuel blend, is composed of 10 percent hydrogen and 90 percent methane.

Hythane, E85 bioethanol and CNG biomethane are extra-clean fuels. This fact made the car successful in surpassing all existing emissions regulations imposed in any market these days. It will also qualify for the upcoming EuroV emissions regulations. The extra-clean fuels also have the benefit of being carbon neutral. This means that the amount of carbon emitted when the fuel is burned is equivalent to the amount acquired by the crops used to make the fuel.

Aside from running on five different fuels, another notable feature of the Volvo V70 Prototype is its relatively consistent performance regardless of the fuel used. Volvo said the turbocharged engine of the prototype is capable of generating about 200 horsepower. Said horsepower is sufficient to power up the wagon.

Volvo has established a remarkable track record in the field of producing environment-friendly cars. These automotive milestones reflect Volvo’s commitment to help clean the environment by reducing harmful emissions that contribute greatly to global warming. Aside from green car manufacture embraced in the environment philosophy of Volvo, other primordial concerns of the automaker include safety and quality.

Volvo has communicated its intention to transform its entire lineup into green cars. The Volvo V50, its station wagon variant, is available in Europe as a Flexi-Fuel model. The car can run on E85 bioethanol. When it runs on said fuel, it generates some 80 percent fewer carbon dioxide emissions than gasoline. The Volvo S40 1.6D is the automaker’s efficient production vehicle that consumes 48 mpg of diesel. The emissions produced are 15 to 20 percent less than an equivalently powerful gasoline model. The Volvo S60 B-Fuel, which is powered by gasoline and biomethane, is also part of Volvo’s green lineup. When fueled by biomethane, tailpipe emissions of carbon dioxide are reduced to some 25 percent compared to gasoline fuel emissions. The evolution of Volvo is aimed at producing fuel-efficient, elegant, functional, green cars.

1997 Merc. Mtnr. V8, AWD. Front Drive shaft assembly does not match up to any assembly I have seen before. The front driveshaft seems to have half of the CV joint attached to it. Auto Parts stores do not know where to find a replacement. Any Thoughts?

Do I need a new battery?

Ok, so….Last night I went to start my car, a 2005 Saturn Ion 2, and it wouldn't crank. I tried it 2 or 3 times and gave up. This morning I tried to start it again and it turned on just fine. This same thing happened about a month ago. I was picking up my car from my school's parking lot and the engine wouldn't crank so when I came back 10 minutes later with my mother to jump the battery, I tried to turn it on one more time before we jumped it and it worked perfectly.

This is the THIRD time this has happened in the last 2 or 3 months and it's always REALLLLY inconvenient. We got my battery tested at Advance Auto Parts and it checked out fine. So I'm confused as to what the problem is. Why does it NOT work but then when i try it again minutes later, everything is perfect? And why does it keep happening? I need to be 100% confident that my car WILL start when I need it to!
And what do I need to do to fix it? Can I get it fixed at the Saturn dealership or can i just fix it myself somehow? Any new part I might need to buy?
to clarify: when i turn the key, nothing happens, lol.

test this out some times when you titan the bat post terminals,or it becomes corroded the metal band that goes around the bat post can stretch not allowing it to get tight on the post, it bottoms out before getting tight.Se if you can twist the neg and pos back and forth if it moves at all it is lose. I would say look at the neg terminal at the bat first that sounds like it may be the problem, if the positive terminal is lose it will usually make a fast ticking noise. if it is lose it probably will take a 10 mm wrench to tight in it. you need to do this asap so it don't over work your alternator. I have seen lots of cars trucks with this problem. i hope this is all that's a matter with it.

About 1.5 years ago my AC quit providing cold air. I purchased another compressor from the junkyard and have yet to install. About two years ago, I replaced my blower motor. Two months ago, the blower motor stopped running again. With winter coming, I am trying to get the system working again to provide heat. I went back to the junkyard and have acquired and tried a used fan regulator, a used blower motor and a used climate control system. All are the correct unit for my car. I have tried them in combination etc. I am convinced that all the parts I have are good and the problem lies elsewhere. One strange occurance has happened three times now. With all switches in the off position, after sitting unused for a week, all three were cool mornings, the fan has come on and run on high until I touch any button on the system and then it stops. I cannot make it come back on again. Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be wrong?
